The Department of Biomedical Informatics was established in 1964 at the University of Utah, located in Salt Lake City and nestled at the foot of the spectacular Wasatch Mountains. The Department serves as a bridging department in the School of Medicine, working independently and in collaboration with both the basic science departments and the clinical science departments, as well as with other schools and colleges.. The Department is internationally recognized for its contributions to clinical health information systems, computerized decision-making, evaluation of computerized patient care, bioinformatics/genetic epidemiology, informatics for translational and clinical research, medical imaging, and public health informatics. Current education and research opportunities range from basic to applied sciences and encompass three tracks for the MS and PhD degrees and a newly created Certificate Program consisting of 15 hours of graduate coursework. The Certificate Program is also available via a distance learning option. The Department is also proud to be a recipient of a National Library of Medicine training grant which supports predoctoral and postdoctoral education and research.

Research affiliations include the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, Intermountain Health Care facilities, the Veterans Administration Medical Center, HealthInsight (the Peer Review Organization for Utah and Nevada), and the Utah Department of Health. As one of the largest biomedical informatics training programs in the world, the department’s faculty and students are a diverse group with a wide range of experience and interests.
