12 July 2023 (Sydney, Australia) – The International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) is pleased to announce winners of the MedInfo 2023 Best Paper and Student Paper Awards. The MedInfo 2023, IMIA’s World Congress on Medical and Health Informatics, Scientific Program Chairs, Dr. Paula Otero and Dr. Philip Scott, announced and recognized the winners at the closing ceremonies of the congress on July 12th, 2023 in Sydney Australia.

MedInfos’ provide both a high-quality scientific exchange of current research and thinking in health and biomedical informatics.  This year over 662 Scientific papers were submitted for scientific peer review from over 53 countries, 281 full papers were accepted for presentation and publication, along with 44 Student papers.  IMIA recognizes the top three papers from the two categories based on the scientific peer reviewed ranking process.

The MedInfo 2023 Best Paper Award was presented to Aida Brankovic, Wenjie Huang, David Cook, Sankalp Khanna, and Konstanty Bialkowski for their paper “Elucidating Discrepancy in Explanations of Predictive Models Developed Using EMR”.

Second place recognition was presented to Irene Muli, Isabella Scandurra and Maria Hägglund for their paper” Primary Healthcare Professionals’ Improvement Suggestions for The Patient Accessible Health Record,” third place was presented to M Sriram Iyengar, Nirav Merchant, Kacey Ernst, Stephen Rains, Mona Arora, Maiya G Block Ngaybe, Myla Gonzalez for their paper “Resilience Informatics for Public Health”.

MedInfo 2023 Best Student Papers were also presented with first place recognition going to Jaya Chaturved, Sumithra Velupillai, Robert Stewart and Angus Roberts for their paper “Identifying Mentions of Pain in Mental Health Records Text: A Natural Language Processing Approach”.

Second place recognition was presented to Koji Yokoyama, Goshiro Yamamoto, Chang Liu, Kazumasa Kishimoto, Yukiko Mori and Tomohiro Kuroda for their paper, “Individual Activity Anomaly Estimation in Operating Rooms Based on Time-Sequential Prediction”; third place was presented to Zamzam Kalume, Bart Jansen, Marc Nyssen, Jan Cornelis, Frank Verbeke for their paper “Baseline Survey on Referrals and Healthcare Provider Needs in View for an Electronic Referral System”.

All accepted and presented scientific peer reviewed papers for MedInfo 2023 will be published in the MedInfo 2023 Proceedings by IOS Press in a few months following the conference.
