It is with great sorrow that we share the news about the passing of Dr. Eta Berner with the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) community.  IMIA shares the loss of Dr. Berner with the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Dr. Berner’s passing will be felt by so many from around the world, and our thoughts go out to her family, dear friends, colleagues, and countless students.

Dr. Berner held numerous appointments at the UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) from 1986 through to her retirement in 2022.   She was the recipient of numerous awards including the Joseph F. Volker Award as the top faculty member in the School of Health Professions, the Provost’s Award for Transformative Online Courses – an award that recognizes those who “exemplify best practices and innovation in online education”, and Excellence in Scholarship Award, which is awarded to the top researcher in SHP.

Her contributions throughout her career were vast, publishing more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, editor of several books, delivering invited presentations, and participating and leading multiple extramurally funded activities.

Dr. Berner was a welcomed Selection Editor for the Annual IMIA Yearbook over many years and was a regular participant at IMIA’s MedInfo’s spanning her career. “The passing of Eta is a huge loss to so many in the IMIA community, she handled her work in co- managing the Health Information Management (HIM) Section of the Yearbook with panache.”, said IMIA President, Brigitte Séroussi.  “She was always encouraging us all with her smile and her willingness to help.” Eta was elected to IMIA’s Academy, the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (IAHSI), as part of the 2019 Class of Fellows and was also an elected Fellow of both ACMI and HIMSS.

Eta Berner will be deeply missed by her many friends and collaborators around the world in the medical and health informatics community and will forever be remembered for her kindness, smile, and ease of making all that met her feel welcomed.
