The Lebanese Hospital Geitaoui – UMC (LHG-UMC) is a tertiary hospital founded in 1927 and affiliated to the Lebanese University’s Faculty of Medical Sciences.

LHG-UMC is a multidisciplinary, non-profit care institution whose mission is to treat all patients in Lebanon without exception and without any distinction of race, class, or religion. Its medical influence extends far beyond the geographical perimeter of Beirut and its suburbs, covering the entire Lebanese territory.

LHG-UMC comprises over 260 inpatient beds, including 35 beds in its intensive care units, 11 operating rooms, 2 catheterization suites, 1 interventional radiology room, and an emergency service capable of accommodating 22 patients. Since 1992, the hospital has also housed the only Burn Center in Lebanon and has taken responsibility for the care of severely burned patients throughout the country.

Since the 1960s, LHG-UMC has been among the pioneering hospitals in Lebanon, noted for its rapid adoption of medical and technological innovations and the high quality of its care. It continues to work to maintain this heritage and ambition despite numerous challenges.

The LHG-UMC’s unit of Health Informatics and Clinical Innovation gathers clinicians and researchers in medical informatics, and aims to leverage the potential of technology, academic leadership and clinical excellence in order to drive health innovation, enhance patient care, and advance academic knowledge in Lebanon in the domain of health informatics. The unit also supports training and academic programs in clinical informatics for the hospital and for the Lebanese University students across health-related faculties.

In practice, the unit activity covers:

  • Providing a strong platform for data driven innovations in clinical care and applications, including the development, implementation and evaluation of AI-driven health solutions for the hospital
  • Collaborating with clinical departments to pilot AI-driven tools for the hospital workflows and processes
  • Organizing workshops and continuing education modules for hospital staff on digital health tools, data literacy, and ethical AI use
  • Developing and delivering structured curricula in clinical informatics for partner universities.
  • Support clinical and public health research for hospital research teams, through maintaining a repository of annotated datasets for academic use
