September 20, 2021 (Geneva, Switzerland) – The International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (IAHSI), is pleased to announce the recent election of Dr. Kaija Saranto as President-Elect and Dr. Graham Wright as Treasurer for the Academy Board. Their terms will commence following the Academy’s Plenary session to be held on the 18th of November 2021.

Dr. Saranto is a Professor for Health and Human Services Informatics at the University of Eastern Finland and Past President of the Finnish Health Informatics Association. She has served as a Scientific Program Co-Chair for MedInfo 2015 and as the VP MedInfo for 2017, as well as in many various other leadership roles within the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) including IMIA’s Nursing Informatics Special Interest Group (IMIA NI).


Dr. Wright is a National Research Foundation (NRF) C2 Rated researcher and has a number of research appointments in South Africa including Adjunct Professor in Health Informatics at Fort University from 2014, and Visiting Professor in the Department of Information Systems at Rhodes University from 2018. He is Past Chair and Treasurer for the British Computer Society Health Informatics Forum and has served IMIA in various leadership roles including as the IMIA representative for BCS Health, Chair of IMIA’s Open Source Working Group and has been a long-standing member of IMIA NI.

Dr. Saranto and Dr. Wright are both Inaugural Fellows of the Academy. “I am delighted to congratulate Kaija and Graham in their forthcoming roles in the Academy. Both are highly accomplished and well-known leaders in the field, and I am certain they will lead the Academy forward.” said Dr. William Hersh, President of IAHSI. “I look forward to working with them in my remaining term as President and beyond.”


IAHSI, established in 2017, as part of the IMIA. The Academy is similar to other national academies of sciences. It seeks to nominate and elect those whose contributions in informatics are recognized internationally. The goal is to promote the dissemination of knowledge and best practices, foster new ideas, and encourage worldwide collaboration and sharing of expertise and resources.
