The Health Informatics Society of Sri Lanka (HISSL) was founded on 15/11/1998. The inaugural meeting was held at the Auditorium of the Sri Lanka Medical Association. The founder President of the society was Dr. Shyam Fernando.
The HISSL had its origins in the Medical Informatics Committee of the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA), which was formed in January 1997. Since the founding of HISSL in November 1998, the encouragement and support we received from many resulted in the successful organisation of three academic session in 1999, 2003, 2004 and 2008 and many other academic activities in between including joint sessions with the SLMA and the participation of our members at meetings of the Asia Pacific Association for Medical Informatics conferences.
The turning point in HISSL activities came in 2007 when on a suggestion of HISSL the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo commenced a MSc in Biomedical Informatics (http;//www.msc-bmi-pgim.org). This course actively supported and conducted by members of HISSL and run by a Specialty Board in Biomedical Informatics chaired by the President of HISSL has revolutionized eHealth in Sri Lanka. The first batch of graduates produced by this course are holding key positions in the health sector in Sri Lanka and spearheading the development of eHealth in the country, The eHealth Sri Lanka 2010 conference (http://ehealth2010.hissl.org/) organised by the HISSL was a milestone in eHealth in Sri Lanka. It was attended by over 300 delegates from all sectors of the health care services in Sri Lanka. The HISSL publishes the Sri Lanka Journal of Biomedical Informatics (http://www.sljol.info/index.php/SLJBMI) – an online, open access, peer reviewed journal.
