About GMDS
Founded in 1955, the GMDS (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Medizinische Informatik, Biometrie und Epidemiologie) is the German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology and is the only scientific organization in this field in Germany. It is the official national member society within the EFMI and IMIA and closely cooperates with related scientific societies.
Founded in the 1950s as a scientific association and now with more than 1,900 members, the GMDS is currently one of the largest scientific societies in this field worldwide.
The GMDS comprises five divisions (medical informatics, biometry, epidemiology, medical documentation and medical bioinformatics/systems biology), with a wide range of active working groups. The Steering Committee of the GMDS is chaired by the president.
The GMDS publishes a national scientific journal, ‘Medizinische Informatik, Biometrie und Epidemiologie’. The articles are published in GMS German Medical Science online in German or English:www.egms.de/en/journals/mibe/index.shtml
The GMDS also publishes the international journal ‘Methods of Information in Medicine (MIM)’, to which all members of the GMDS other than patrons/sponsors have access online.
The GMDS organizes a large national scientific conference annually with around 900 to 1,500 participants, as well as a spring congress on health information systems and a number of working conferences. Proceedings of all national conferences are published online onhttp://www.egms.de/static/en/meetings/index.htm
The GMDS issues certificates in the fields of medical informatics, biometry, epidemiology, and medical documentation. The certificates are awarded based on the professional and scientific experience of the applicants.
