Focus Area or Topic For the Special Interest Group
The focus of this SIG is to provide a collaborative environment for those Francophone members of IMIA whose ability to interact in English is limited, or when French language-specific issues may have a significant impact on medical informatics issues and would benefit from more synergies within the Francophone community.

Expanded description of the content areas that will be worked on by the proposed special interest group
An informal Francophone community of medical informaticians has existed for decades and has been meeting every other year at the “Journées Francophones d’Informatique Médicale” (JFIM). The history of the JFIM meetings, listed below, shows an increasing internationalization of the meeting, reflecting the widening constituency of the Francophone medical informatics community:

The Francophone SIG will propose projects that deal with health informatics aspects in which the French language has a significant influence. An example is the creation of resources for processing French medical language, such as corpora and lexicons.
